Wilderness Corps heads to the Marbles: "Everyone was in a groove"

On July 2, our Wilderness Conservation Corps returned from a work hitch to the Marble Mountain Wilderness Area. It was the third outing for our crew who had onboarded at the beginning of the month, and the very first for a new crew of interns who had just arrived.

To divide maintenance tasks, the two groups dispatched to separate areas. The more experienced cohort worked on a stretch of the Bridge Creek Trail #5816 starting at the junction with Haypress Trail #5828 heading south towards Cedar Flat.

After four days of work, crew member Mim Fritzsche says that “everyone was in a groove.” The maintenance included complete tread replacement, as well as heavy brushing and crosscut logout.

The second crew began work on the Haypress Trail, where they completed training in basic trail maintenance skills.

Both crews converged on their eighth and final day in the backcountry, working together to remove a thick section of brush growing in the wake of the 2021 McCash Fire. Read all the details on explore.siskiyoumountainclub.org.

Now, both crews are out on the Mt. Hood National Forest in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness Area. They’re taking on an ambitious project for fourteen straight days, and will be resupplied by volunteers with food partway through the trip. Stay tuned here on our blog or on social media for more updates on their progress!
