Hiring Writing and Communications Intern

Siskiyou Mountain Club is hiring an intern who will build a resume that includes professional experience in research, data analysis, and communications. Up to 1,000 hours are available in the 24-25 school year. 

About Siskiyou Mountain Club
We are a small nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving trails in the backcountry of Southwest Oregon and Northwest California. Our trails crews have saved hundreds of trail miles, and we have adopted approximately 400 miles of trails in the most remote reaches of a region known for its vast expanse of public lands.

Summary
SMC has built a portfolio of communications that include a popular online newsletter, website blog, social media accounts, and film. Our award-winning communications serve as a resource to the outdoor community who depends on our communications for information, updates, and entertainment. We aim to continue improving the quality of our communications by incorporating more data and research into our messaging.  

Job Description
The research intern is responsible for collecting data, anecdotes and quotes that go on to be used in our communications. Projects include pouring over various written records including wildfire dispatches and historic collections; collecting and summarizing data including recent census results; conducting and summarizing surveys, and performing interviews.

The right candidate will transition into a role in which they are summarizing and publishing the data they collect in press releases, appeals, and other communications, including social media, print and online newsletters, blogs, and film. 


Terms
Flexible. Location is remote and local interns will be expected to engage in several in-person meetings per quarter or semester. An educational stipend may be available if the internship extends into subsequent terms. Reports to executive director.

  • Duties and Responsibilities

    Research

    • Locate and review documents including policy documents, daily wildfire updates, historical records, and others.
    • Summarize reviews 
    • Locate and extrapolate data from US Census and other sources
    • Develop and conduct surveys
    • Conduct interviews

    Writing and content development

    • Develop abstracts, summaries and conclusions for research projects
    • Draft updates, stories, and summaries to be used in appeals, communications, and grant applications

    Assist with media projects including film, photo, and campaigns

    Required Skills and Experience
    The candidate does not need previous experience but needs to be able to conform to a professional development, be punctual, responsive, and follow directions well. 

    • Basic computer skills including spreadsheet and word processing applications, as well as comprehensive internet searches using traditional search engines and other databases
    • Ability to be punctual and work in a professional work environment
    • Follow through on tasks 
    • Strong verbal communication skills
    • Basic English writing skills
