The Middle Fork Ranger District encompasses over 750,000 acres, making it the largest District on the Willamette National Forest. Travelers to this area, which is accessed primarily by Highway 58, will see towering trees, impressive waterfalls, rugged mountains, and snow covered volcanoes from prominent viewpoints. Specific to this District are some notable features, including a portion of the headwaters for the Willamette River; Waldo Lake, one of the most pristine lakes in the world; and Salt Creek Falls, Oregon's second tallest waterfall. The Middle Fork Ranger District also includes the Waldo Lake Wilderness and portions of the Diamond Peak and Three Sisters Wildernesses.
There are over 600 trails on the District, 24 campgrounds, a Scenic Byway, a Wild and Scenic River, several boat launches on reservoirs, the Willamette Pass Ski Resort, and the Huckleberry Flats OHV area.
