Covering almost 11,800 acres, Linville Gorge Wilderness sits to the ease of Mount Mitchell. The wilderness offers one one of the most rugged and scenic gorges in the east. In addition its land is laced with trails that descend to the depths of the gorge, The gorges' rim gives awesome views of Linville River spilling over layered rocks.
Part of Pisgah National Forest, Linville Gorge Wilderness boasts spectacular rock formations on the eastern side of Jonas Ridge and the western side of Linville Mountain.
The Forest Service chief first designated Linville Gorge a wilderness in 1951. With the signing of the wilderness Act of 1964 the area became one of the original parts of the National wilderness system. Through the 1984 North Carolina Wilderness Act, the original 7,575 acres were increased to the present 11,786 Acres.
