"A Long Way to Nowhere" is a 28-minute film that follows a crew of young Americans as they endure a week-long traverse of Oregon's rugged and fire-shaped Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area to restore a forlorn hiking trail. The crew carries 80-year-old crosscut saws and other hand tools deep into this unforgiving wilderness to beat back at the maintenance deferments and fire damage wreaking havoc on the area's expansive trail system.
Communications staff member Vince DiFrancesco who directed the film in 2023 focused on a couple of crew members as they sometimes struggle to find meaning in the program they competed to be part of. "A Long Way to Nowhere" captures the juxtaposition of what it's like to be in a strikingly beautiful area with pristine river canyons and wild mountain lakes, all while having a job to do.
