Taking on the Middle Fork: Open by fall

by Gabriel Howe, Executive Director
for the Siskiyou Hiker

06 MAY | RUCH, OR. -- This year alone, community volunteers have put almost 340 hours of work into the national recreation trail that winds up theMiddle Fork Applegate canyon.

And they’re getting somewhere. By the end of spring, someone will be able to walk from the Upper Applegate into the Red Buttes on this national treasure. From there, they’ll be able to traverse the Siskiyou highlands and tie into the wilderness.

We need your help to seal the this Thursday, May 15. All skill levels and abilities are welcome. You just need long pants, a sack lunch, water, and be up for a day on the trail with us. Email trevor@siskiyoumountainclub.org now for details and to sign up.

I know he’ll be excited to bring you up to this national recreation trail, which it turns out there are a lot of if you search. If you follow that search, you’ll see the links are all dead. But the community is alive and they're taking this trail back.

The 300+ hours volunteers have put into this trail mean something more than opening up a derelict trail that was once a source of pride for the leaders who championed for its "national recreation" status. The hours show how the community is fighting back against the rot eating away our trails, facilities, campgrounds, picnic areas, boat ramps, pavilions, guard stations, fire lookouts, and all the other beautiful places where everyday people escape to connect with their friends and family.

So check out our calendar, sign up with Trevor for our monthly stewardship day if not this month, then next, and if you can't make it out because of physical limitations or want to help in other ways, reach out.
