25 August 2014 | Brookings, OR — Last weekend volunteers ranging ages 18 – 72 were busy packing supplies into SMC’s trail crew deep in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area.

Four volunteers and SMC executive director Gabe Howe arrived to the Vulcan Lake Trailhead early on Friday, August 22. They loaded up their packs with food for a crew working 18 nights in the wilderness and started the hike into a spring near Johnson Butte.

There they met the crew and continued on for another 2.5-miles to a water source between there and Box Canyon that has been coined “Mosquito Bog.” Volunteer Al Collinet packed in a flexible cooler full of cold beverages.

“This is the coldest soda I’ve ever had in the Kalmiopsis,” said SMC crew leader Aaron Babcock.

The support crew camped out at Mosquito Bog and got an early start on Saturday for Vulcan Lake, which was primed for a swim. The hike back was about eight miles, leaving the pack crew sore.

After a soak Bryant Zwart sat staring at Vulcan Peak looming over its lake. “Lets do it,” he said. The mountains were calling and we had to go.

A few of us filled up on water and headed for the summit on an off-trail route. We pulled ourselves up over red, sun-bleached rocks and whacked through brush for about 45 minutes until we reached the peak, which provided far off views of the wilderness, its buckled ridges and peaks, and the nearby coast range.

Sunday morning we headed for breakfast at Superfly restaurant in Brookings, and a few of us spent some time on the beach and tried out Tight Lines, local micro brewery with a small barrel brewing system.

Support missions are crucial for supplying a remote crew who needs lots of calories. Without the help they would be forced to spend more days supplying themselves, and less days on the trail working.
